Simon Brightwell has three decades’ experience of applying engineering geophysics to the investigation of the built and natural environment. Working with Fugro since 2007, he is part of the team responsible for integrated ground investigation and asset integrity surveys. Previously he was a founding director of Aperio Limited and a project manager at GB Geotechnics.
Developments in geotechnical site investigation to reduce construction risk
Despite improvements in technology and materials it is still surprisingly rare for infrastructure construction projects to achieve programme and budget targets. “Unforeseen ground conditions” are the most widely quoted reason for these costly failures, but is there more that could be done to reduce uncertainty? Geohazard and contamination risk can often be reduced by well-integrated and appropriately phased site investigations resulting in a robust ground model.
